Herbivore Lapis Oil Review [In-Depth]

What’s not to love about Herbivore’s beautiful glass packaging and all vegan, natural ingredients?

If you’re like me and have been eyeing the products from Herbivore skincare for a while, read on for this in-depth review of the Herbivore Lapis Facial Oil.

Spoiler: the Blue Tansy mask in the photo here went a bit dark after receiving it :( I used up all the Lapis oil but ultimately it didn’t make it to my top all-time skincare favourites list.

Herbivore Lapis Oil Quick Facts

Makeup Alley Rating: Lapis Facial Oil 3.6/5 of 21 reviews

Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clarity Mask 3.9/5 out of 25 reviews

Formulated without: Synthetic ingredients, fragrances, parabens and preservatives. Completely natural, vegan and cruelty free.

Potential irritants: Lapis facial oil has Rosa Damascena which has fragrant compounds which is potentially an irritant.

Application: Lapis Facial Oil: Fast absorbing oil but can leave skin feeling greasy.

Clarity mask: Thin, light feel mask that absorbs well into skin that is soothing for the skin and leaves skin feeling smooth.

Price: $29.50 CAD, $24 USD

Where to purchase: Herbivore, Sephora, Amazon, Socialite Beauty,

Scent: Herbal scent, very natural and smells slightly ‘woody’.

Packaging: Light blue and white glass bottles and jars that are recyclable. Does not come with a spatula but is easy to get product out.

Main pros: The duo’s ingredients are all natural. The mask is supposed to be lightweight and very soothing. Calms down skin and leaves skin feeling smoother, less textured and radiant. Facial oil provides the face with some moisture and is known to calm skin. Blue tansy flower supposedly reduces redness.

Main cons: The facial oil can be a bit greasy. I didn’t find it to be too impressive and worth the money. Both products might be prone to spoilage. Although the site says the color differences are normal - the color that the mask turned into was so unappealing I didn’t even want to put it on my face :(

About

The Herbivore website notes that the duo set will maintain healthy looking skin as the facial oil will reduce redness and sooth blemish-prone skin, and the mask clarifies the skin with the use of natural ingredients, such as White Willow Bark, to help reduce redness.

Herbivore Lapis Oil: How to apply

Step 1: Apply 4-6 drops to the face to cleanse and tone skin (It says to do this morning and night but it’s pretty oily so I recommend just using this in your nightly routine)
Step 2: Massage the oil into the face for 1-3 minutes until absorbed into the skin
Step 3: Apply make up once oil is absorbed.

Herbivore Lapis Oil Pros:

The lapis oil doesn’t really completely sink into the skin. But it is still a beautiful texture and has a light herbal/floral scent.

I applied this nightly as my serum (under my moisturizer) and always woke up with dewy, hydrated skin. You can usually see a difference overnight. It helps a lot with smoothing out any smaller textures and imperfections over time and reduces some of the redness in my t-zone.

Blue tansy Clarifying Mask Review: The Bad

When I originally received this duo in the mail, the clarifying mask was more of a blue color. By the time I started using it (maybe a month after), it had changed to a darker green. On the Sephora website it says that since they don’t use any synthetic dyes, colors may differ and that’s totally normal. But I personally just felt really skeptical and so didn’t really use the mask enough to see any results.

Herbivore Lapis Oil Review Summary

I enjoyed using the Lapis oil in lieu of a serum while I had it and it was hydrating. I imagine the size would be perfect for those just wanting to try the brand out - the Lapis oil lasted about a month with regular use.

Overall I wasn’t super blown away by the product though and wouldn’t repurchase. It wasn’t that impressive and I’d worry it’d go rancid like the tansy mask!
